Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to use the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father was for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma to later direct a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of a particular juror. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. Apart from PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
